Poverty Alleviation Through Participation in Fair Trade Coffee Networks: Synthesis of Case Research Question Findings

Title: Poverty Alleviation Through Participation in Fair Trade Coffee Networks: Synthesis of Case Research Question Findings
By: Peter Taylor
Summary:

The article takes findings from seven cooperatives in Latin America and Africa both before and after their entry into Fair Trade coffee networks. It details cooperative organization, access to and participation within local, national, and international Fair Trade and cooperative networks, financing, gender issues, and educational initiatives. It cautions that many of the failings or difficulties associated with these cooperatives are not due to Fair Trade, but to interpersonal conflict and problems with democratic governance and cooperatives in general. Despite problems and setbacks, Fair Trade certification brought improvements to all seven cooperatives in the case studies, although it is not the only or final solution to poverty. Many of the benefits noted are intangible or indirect, but are benefits nonetheless.
