Keeping Fair Trade Fair in Mexico

Title: Keeping Fair Trade Fair in Mexico
By: Hope Bastian
Summary:

Some Mexican farmers are saying the prices offered by the Fair trade market are no longer enough to cover the costs of production and take care of their families. In 1992 a loose network of European Fair trade advocacy organizations joined together to form TransFair International which later became the Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO). According to the FLO website, minimum prices are determined by calculating the cost of sustainable production and living costs in each region where the coffee is grown. But changes in the FLO are taking the organization in an entirely different direction as the entrance of transnational organizations into the fair trade market shift the balance away from its roots.
